Truly The BEST PANCAKE in NYC

Back in May 2010, I did a “To-Eat List” post on Clinton Street Baking Co. and Restaurant.
Now that I’ve finally had a chance to visit, I present you with my firsthand report:

Upon arrival at Clinton Street Baking Co., my stomach was very excited
I couldn’t wait to order their famous pancakes!
FYI, I’m not a pancake person, I’m more a waffle person.
But, since Clinton Street is famous for their pancakes, ordering them is a must!
So I did…(also ordered waffles just in case) along with other delicious items on their menu that day

Their famous blueberry pancakes with maple butter - a New York Times Favorite!

Special of the Day: waffle with cinnamon sour cream, caramelized pear, topped with pistachio and warm maple butter

Buttermilk Biscuit Sandwich: scrambled eggs, melted cheddar, homemade tomato jam with hash browns

Banana Walnut Pancakes

Spanish Scramble: three eggs, chorizo, tomatoes, caramelized onion, scallions, melted Monterey jack, with hash browns and sourdough toast

Brioche French Toast: caramelized banana, roasted pecans, warm maple butter

Clinton St. Omelette with hash browns and sourdough toast

Sugar Cured Bacon - one of the BEST bacon I've ever had! ♥

Special of the Day: Truffle Fried Eggs, fried eggs over mushroom, asparagus and bacon topped with black truffle oil

Overall experience at Clinton Street Baking Co. was awesome!
All the food that I tasted was very fresh, clean-tasting and top notch quality,
no wonder it has been voted the BEST PANCAKE in NYC several times!
ALICE APPROVED!

If you happen to be in the NYC area, go there and order the pancake, or waffle, or french toast, or that sugar cured bacon…etc! :P

Tips: Best to go with party 4 or less, the dining area is very cozy, go after lunch rush to avoid the long wait, credit cards accepted at dinner time only

The Boiling Crab

The Boiling Crab originated in the small town of Seadrift, Texas, known for it’s famous fresh and decadent seafood.
I had planned on visiting while I was in California.
However, due do the anticipated long waiting period, we had to change our dinner plans
(I heard there’s sometimes a 2+ hour wait during peak time)
After many many MANY friends raved about The Boiling Crab and the SHA-BANG sauce…
Now, I’m regretting my poor decision making…
So, if you are in Texas or California, PLEASE go try it out – and, of course, let me know what you think!

53rd and 6th Halal Cart

New York City, the nation’s capital of street foods & food trucks
With the multicultural influences, naturally, the street vendors in NYC serve a variety of cuisines.
Back in 2005, one cart won the “Best Halal Team” Vendy Award
Since it was conveniently located next to a hotel I stayed, I had to try it out!

The Halal cart menu was very simple: chicken or gyros.
I ordered the famous “Chicken and Rice”.
The order came with a bed of saffron rice (yellow), side of lettuce, chunks of tomatoes and thinly-shredded chicken, topped off with lots of white sauce – all for only $6.50
I have no idea what’s in the white sauce, but it’s super delicious. I would have been happy with just the white sauce and rice!
They also offer a red sauce which is pretty spicy, even by Asian standards, so use with caution.
Even though the chicken was a bit dry, the white sauce saved the day.
Overall, it’s a great value for $6.50, and they’re open late! BONUS!

Note: the 53rd and 6th Halal Cart people wear bright yellow t-shirts (as seen in the pictures) so don’t get fooled by other, copy-cat, carts!

Report: All-You-Can-Eat Stone Crab

Last Friday, my gang and I went to Kitchen 305 (located in the Newport Beachside Resort Hotel) for the all-you-can-eat stone crab deal

Our reservation was at 8PM but, when we got there, the valet parking was full so we had to park in the mall across the street.

The restaurant itself was lively, there was a DJ playing electronic/house music and it was happening.

The host took us to the back of the restaurant, where they seat larger parties

The crab claw deal comes with your choice of a soup,  salad, one side and, of course, endless stone crab claws

The “soup du jour” was tomato bisque which was OK

The salad was average and the portion was very small

You were given 5 choices for sides: Creamed Spinach, Cole Slaw, Colossal Onion Rings, Lyonnais Potatoes, and Steak Fries with Dilled Sour Cream

Don’t get too excited, though, the side dishes were pathetic (see pictures below)

These aren't the "colossal" onion rings I was expecting

These definitely don't look like "steak fries"...

But enough about the sides, let’s talk about the stone crabs!

To start off, the server brings you a plate of 5 claws. However, during the course of the dinner, your plate will never go empty! One server’s job was to keep piling those bad boys up in your plate, you didn’t have to worry about ordering more and more and MORE!

The size of the claws can vary but most of them were pretty fresh and delightful

Start off with 5 claws, accompanied with mustard

Buffalo working on his stone crabs

Professor trying to eat Honey's stone crab

A whole plate of stone crabs!

However, after 15 claws, I threw in the towel and didn’t wanna see anymore crabs for the next month or so! :P
If you like stone crabs, give Kitchen 305 a try
Note: Make sure to make reservation, the all-you-can-eat stone crabs offer is only on Fridays.

Doughnut Plant

Almost a year ago, I saw a show on TV that introduced the “Doughnut Plant”
Ever since that day, I’ve been dying to go there and hold that heavenly square of dough in my hand
At long last, I FINALLY DID!

YES I AM HERE I AM HERE!!!

Flavors of the Day

Doughnut Plant uses fresh, local ingredients to create their doughnuts.
In addition, owner Mark Israel said “NO” to trans fats,
“If you make a dough with a right technique, it’s not greasy,” says Mark.
Mark is right, all his doughnuts are divine.
Both the soft yet chewy texture of the yeast doughnut and the delicious jelly inside
YES, I HAD THE PEANUT BUTTER GLAZE BLACK BERRY JELLY SQUARE DOUGHNUT
It was heaven~~~

Left - Peanut Butter Glaze Blackberry Jelly Square Doughnut; Right - Valrhona Chocolate Yeast Doughnut

Of course, that’s not the only doughnut I ordered
I also tried the Crème Brûlée doughnut, Toasted Almond, Valrhona Chocolate, Tres Leches and Vanilla Bean
However, the Peanut Butter Glaze with Blackberry Jelly was just the BEST!!!
Runner ups: Crème Brûlée and Valrhona Chocolate

Crème Brûlée fillings with a nice crispy crunch when you bite into it

ALICE TOTALLY APPROVED!!!
If you are ever in NYC, please go there and eat some doughnuts
Beware, there may be a line so get there early if you wanna try popular flavors
Also, there’s very limited seating inside the bakery so it’s best take it to go!

Do It Doggi Style

Just by pure accident, I stumbled upon a tiny cart in the Coral Gables area

At the bottom of their super-simple menu (hot dog or hamburger – can’t go wrong there) it said:
“Ask for our special ‘fully loaded hamburger’ and our ‘hot doggi style’”
When opportunities like these present themselves, I just can’t say no
I went ahead ordered the “fully loaded hamburger”
*I swear I do it as a public service* ;)

The friendly lady at the cart took my order and started to get busy
Beef patty on the grill, warm up the burger bun, take out the toppings, etc
Wait a minute, was that an egg on the flat top?
YES IT WAS!
Soon, the assembly began:
Beef patty, tomato, lettuce, onion, avocado, corn, ham, bacon, papitas (potato sticks) and EGG
Let’s not forget the ketchup, mustard, mayo and selection of home-made special sauces!

Now that you’ve seen it, can you believe that this ridiculously-tasty Venezuelan burger costs only $7.50?
Great value for the price I’d say!
ALICE APPROVED!!!
